Establishment
Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics under Science and Literature Faculty was decided to establish with the unanimous senatorial resolution of Istanbul Kultur University at the fourth meeting in 23th November, 2006. The establishment of department with core staff Prof. Dr. Atilla Ozalpan, head of department, Prof. Narcin Palavan-Unsal, Prof. Dr. Cimen Atak, Assist. Prof. Dr. Atok Olgun and Research Assist. Elif Damla Arisan was approved by Higher Education Council (YÖK) in 11th May, 2007.
The first students were accepted in 2007 Fall semester. Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics continues its academical facilities in MOBIGEN building since 1st October 2007 in Atakoy Campus.
Qualification Awarded
The students must obtain at least 136 national credit (240 ECTS) to finish their quadrennial education period to get Molecular Biology and Genetics BSc degree.

Double Major–Minor ProgramsAccording to the undergraduate education and examination
rules, successful students can attend one of the minor programs such as Mathematics and Computer, Computer Engineering, Phycology and Physics. The successful students are achieved an additional minor program certificate when they are receiving their Molecular Biology and Genetics BSc degree.
Succesful students at Department of Mathematics and Computer Science can also be educated in any program in the University:
Students, who succesfully complete the Double Major program and receive the right to the undergraduate degree of both departments, are given two separate Undergraduate diplomas.
Students of Molecular Biology and Genetics Department have opportunity to attend minor programs of all departments in the Istanbul Kultur University. The students who successfully accomplished the minor programs could receive Minor Program Certificate of these programs.

Graduation Requirements To obtain Molecular Biology and Genetics Program BSc degree, students must have 136 national credits (240 ECTS) with 2.0 GPA over 4.0.
International Cooperations The bilateral aggrements between Istanbul Kultur University, Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics and La Sapienza University (Italy),
Universidade de Coimbra (Portugal), The Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (Portugal) and Trier University (Germany) for student and staff exchange (ERASMUS) is established since 2008.
Occupational Profiles Of Graduates The qualified human power is required for Molecular Biology and Genetics applications field in various fields such as medicine, food science, enviroment, agriculture, veterinary, pharmaceutics. For this reason, graduate students may have critical roles by using their how-know in biotechnology related industry applications. In addition, research facilities for genomic and proteomic approaches for life sciences and medicine might be alternative vocation objectives.
Access to Further Studies There is no possibility to transfer credits to Molecular Biology and Genetics program from vocational faculties. Following BSc degree, graduates can attend graduate programs in Molecular Biology and Genetics Department (MSc). Admission to graduate programs is determined by the several
rules which is determined by senatorial resolution. Graduate students with BSc degree may also attend other MSc or PhD programs in other national or international universities.
Departmental Facilities
Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics is consisted of full time four Professor, one Assoc. Prof, and six research assistant. Addition to the core staff, to increase the course catalog content several lecturers are invited from other universities to give these courses.
Our students (undergraduate and graduate) can join projects which are supported by national or international research funds. In addition our students can submit their own projects to national research fund providers under supervision of deparment staff.

Research
Research topics are divided into two part which are presented one research group. Molecular cancer biology group is under supervision of Prof. Narcin Palavan-Unsal is focused on cyclin dependent kinases (CDK) and their intracellular effects on signalling networks in various cancer cells. In addition research on CDK inhibitors and their apoptotic effects by monitoring several signalling networks including polyamines are going in prostate, colon and breast cancer cells. Group is also investigating several single nucleotid mutations in possible relationship with human diseases.
Plant biotechnology group is under supervision of Prof. Dr. Cimen Atak is focused on salt and drought stress in several agriculture plants and also ornamentals by application of radiation. Group is also working on plant cell culture techniques and charecterization of target genes by using proteomic approaches. Investigation of epigenetic regulation of seed generations is another research objective
