The department, which started its operations in the Ataköy Campus Main Building in 2002, had its first graduates in 2006. The Department, which started with 25 students and whose education quota was increased to 50 students, has been continuing its education in the same campus since 2002 with the increasing number of students. The Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design was established in 2001 within the İKÜ Faculty of Art and Design and was opened in the 2002-2003 academic year. It started its educational activities by taking its first students. In accordance with the letter of the Higher Education Executive Board dated 08.02.2016 and numbered 89480013/ 286, it has been deemed appropriate to transfer the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design within Istanbul Kültür University, Faculty of Art and Design, to the Faculty of Architecture, together with its current students and staff. As of the 2016-17 academic year, the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design started to provide education in English as well as in Turkish.

Looking at the department management process historically; Head of the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design was founded by Prof. Dr. Mete ÜNÜGÜR and heserved as the Head of the Department until his death, respectively, between 2004 and 2006. It was conducted by Mustafa DEMİRKAN and Prof. Dr. Zafer ERTÜRK between 2006-2014. In 2008, a radical change was made in the education and training activities of the department at the undergraduate and graduate levels. While structuring the course programs, a project-oriented holistic system proposal, nourished by the basic fields of Architecture and Art, was developed.
