This course aims to understand political, economic, and social foundations of the Ottoman Empire. It first examines the classical institutions of the empire, economic structure and different social mechanisms. Then, it tries to analyze the change in the Empire in early modern and modern periods with a special emphasis on economic and social history. It deals with the change in the economic system, inter-communal relations, social life, state-society relations, urban culture, rural life, art and architecture.
