ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN V

Course CodeSemester Course Name LE/RC/LA Course Type Language of Instruction ECTS
MIM0005 5 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN V 2/6/0 CC TURKISH 10
Course Goals In Architectural Design Studio V, the aim is to develop the skill of designing in relation to a problematic site in the urban context by dealing with a group of buildings as a design problem. In this context, students are required to consider urban problems, to analyse interior and exterior space relationship and to resolve a complex program.   The scope of this semester includes, developing a design concept, evaluating an architectural program systematically and integrating multi-disciplinary knowledge with the architectural project.

Prerequisite(s) MIM0004 Architectural Design IV

Schedule Monday, 13:00-16:50; Thursday 09.00-12:50; MTS V-VII
Office Hour(s) only during course hours
Teaching Methods and Techniques During the design studio process, students are directed to perceive the urban problems of the nearby environment and to integrate the inter-disciplinary knowledge, within the discussion platform moderated by the instructors.  The design concept is developed with the help of tools such as sketches, images and models, which are used to describe the ideas related with space.   As a method, during the design process, an awareness is tried to be created by means of analyses in the context of the social and physical environment. Students are expected to research and synthesize information such as transportation, communication and topography of the chosen urban site, to interpret the program of the determined site, and to organize it spatially. Students are also required to define the materials, to design the structural system, and to develop presentation techniques with the aid of computer technologies. Students are encouraged to participate actively in the studio process as individuals or team members. Sharing all studies in the discussion platform created in the studio and being subject to debate and criticism helps to develop students’ communication skills. Attending architectural conferences, reading and writing architectural texts, develops reading and writing skills in the context of design. It is important to create an awareness of contemporary world architecture in relation to ideas, space and practice.
