Course Goals
What a culture casts out as its evil opponent tells a great deal about its own identity. Through the changing representation of the opponent from monsters to villains in texts from the early Middle Ages to the Renaissance, this course aims to trace the change from the pagan to Christian to humanist perceptions as well as from the tribal to feudal to individualist world views.
