Program Objectives
Physics is a fundamental science which explores the formation of and the laws regulating the universe. Because of this feature, physics constitutes the basis of the other natural sciences. In addition, physics is a branch of science that finds applications in many other fields such as medicine, pharmacy, engineering, molecular biology and genetics, as well as in social areas such as archeology, art history, economics. Furthermore physics plays the role of a leader in developing new engineering areas that uses nano-technology, super conductivity, photonics and biotechnology.
In the physics department, students not only gain the traditional physics knowledge, but also gain problem solving skills to solve the problems they will encounter throughout their lives. They also learn to comply with the social, democratic and ethical principles. Our objective is to educate our students as well-informed intellectual individuals that reflect scientific and technological developments to the society. All subjects covered in the contemporary physics courses are supported by laboratory studies. Final year students are subject to write a research thesis under the supervision of a faculty member, to learn how to carry out scientific research.
In our department;
As physics as a science is taught, how and where this knowledge can be used is also of concern. Our students learn to use and program computers, receive basic electronics besides thefundamental physics education.
Our students can attend to a double major or a subspecialty program with Mathematics and Computer Department or can attend to a sub-specialty program with Molecular Biology and Genetics Department. They can also complete necessary courses in education to be a high school teacher
Our graduates can work in anywhere where physical measurements and analysis are required, such as research and development departments of various institutions and organizations. In addition, our graduates who aim to be scientists, or who prefer to specialize in particular fields of physics can receive education in graduate level.
Our students can also benefit from the laboratories of Electronics and Computer Sciences Departments besides those of the Physics Department.
Great importance to professional foreign language (English) is given. Foreign language courses are compulsory for six semesters.
Our students can receive education from the partner universities abroad, within the framework of SOCRATES / ERASMUS program, within a certain time limit without losing a semester in their universities.
The research in the department is focused on astrophysics, chaos and dynamical systems, molecular physics and molecular spectroscopy, theoretical physics, and x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy.
Establishment
Department of Physics is established in 22 January 2004 with the 2003-2004/7 numbered Senate decision and YOK approval dated 11 May 2004, under the direction of Prof. Dr. Taner Bulat, as the fourth department of the Faculty of Science and Letters. It started education with a total number of 31 students, 20 students with a scholarship and 11 with tuition fee in 2004.
Qualification Awarded
To
the students that completed all courses that took place in a
four-year education plan successfully and that have at least 240
AKTS, undergraduate degree is given in Physics field.
Students who successfully complete the courses in the four-year syllabus with at least 240 ECTS are awarded with an undergraduate (Bachelor of Science) degree in Physics.

Admission and Registration RequirementsThe Department of Physics accepts students following the Central Placement Examination, conducted by OSYM. Applicants are placed in the Physics Program by OSYM with the consideration of their LYS scores, students’ choices and the capacity and conditions of these programs. Registration of the students that are placed in the Physics Program is done by Student Affairs Department in a certain calendar framework decided by OSYM.
Foreign students are also accepted to the Physics Program according to the Admission and Registration Regulation of the foreign students to Istanbul Kultur University Undergraduate and Graduate Programs.
Registrations of the students who are admitted to the Physics Program are operated by the Student Affairs Department according to the calendar determined by OSYM.

Double Major–Minor Programs
Successful students studying the Physics Major Program can partially join the undergraduate education of all the departments in the university in a certain program framework, in accordance with the Undergraduate Education and Exam Regulation laws. This education program is called Double Minor. Students who completed the Double Minor program with their Physics Program are given a Double Minor Certificate with their Physics Undergraduate Diploma.
Promising students of the Physics Program can also study, the Mathematics-Computer undergraduate program in parallel. The acceptance to this Double Major program and its continuation are subject to periodic evaluation by the Department. Successful students of the double major program are awarded with two BSc diplomas, in Physics and Mathematics.
InternshipInternship is possible, though not mandatory in the Physics Undergraduate Program.
Graduation RequirementsStudents are required to enroll 240 ECTS credits of the relevant courses and get 2.00 (over 4.00) grades in average, for graduation.
International Cooperations
Erasmus Program is a European Union program to encourage European Colleges and Universities to cooperate with each other. Unlimited financial support is provided for Colleges and Universities to generate and implement common projects with each other and to make students and staff exchanges with each other for short time periods. The students have the chance to become an exchange student in a University in a European country which has an agreement with our university inside 1 academic year for 1 or 2 (3-12 months) semesters and to get financial support for the time of their stay abroad.
Occupational Profiles Of Graduates
Physics Department students can have “double major” or "double minor” with Mathematics-Computer Department or double minor program with Molecular Biology and Genetics Department.
Our graduates can serve in various organizations and companies, in research and development laboratories and at any place that measurement and physical analysis are necessary. In addition, graduate programs are available for those who aim to become a scientist or to specialize in certain areas of physics, including astrophysics, atomic and molecular physics, and matematical physics.
Access to Further Studies The graduates can proceed to the Master of Science program on Physics at the Institute of Sciences. In addition, they can finish a certain part of their graduate program in a university having an Erasmus agreement with our University. The students can also have graduate education in a university they wish inside or outside the country as long as they meet the admission conditions.

Each of these labs can host about 10 experiments and 40 students. Starting in the 2006-2007 academic year the labs for Physics I (Mechanics), Physics II (Electricity & Magnetism), and Physics III (Optics, Modern Physics) have been completely renewed. Physics I and II labs serve also for students of Engineering and Architectural Faculty.
4. Semiconductor Characterization Laboratory
Electrical properties of common semiconductor materials are examined.
5. Astronomy Laboratory
This lab has a NEX opto-mechanical planetarium with a 3-m portable dome, a Meade LX200 25.4-cm GPS Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope and accessories (CCD and various filters), 5 Galileo-type refracting scopes.

Program Activities
Research is carried out in the fields of astrophysics (solar physics, stellar atmospheres, neutron stars), chaos and dynamical systems, molecular physics (molecular spectroscopy), theoretical physics, and X-ray fluorescent spectroscopy.
