Program Objectives

   The Department of Cartoon and Animation aims to train "Cartoon and Animation Artists" who are equipped with the knowledge, skills and abilities to serve in every unit of the information and communication sector, advertising agencies, corporate communication departments, who are committed to ethical values, who are aware of the developments in the world and in their country and who believe in the importance of lifelong learning. 

   The Department of Cartoon and Animation aims to equip students with comprehensive knowledge about the historical development of Cartoon and Animation cinema and classical animation techniques. Through practical examples and student practice, it reinforces their understanding and analysis of these techniques. Over the course of four years, students grasp the fundamentals of cartoon, cut-out, stop motion, collage, pixelation, shadow, object and computer animation. They also study film language, basic art, communication, art history, photography, drawing, sound, effects and narrative. The education extends to 2D and 3D animation film production. Students enrich their education with courses from related departments. Workshops and projects culminate in short films and a graduation project. Exchange programs offer international experience and the chance for a second diploma through the Double Major Program. It is aimed to encourage students to enroll in related department courses, to promote multidisciplinary understanding and to increase their contribution to the audiovisual sector.





Establishment

Department of Cartoon and Animation, Istanbul Kültür University, Faculty of Art and Design, was opened with the Decree Law published in the Official Gazette dated May 22, 2001 and numbered 24409. The Department of Cartoon Film and Animation, which was established in 2016 within the Faculty of Art and Design, has been admitting students with YKS-AYT score since 2019-2020 academic year.





Qualification Awarded

Students in the Cartoon and Animation Department are obliged to obtain a CGPA of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 in order to successfully complete all the courses that are available (total 240 ECTS credits). They graduate with a total of 240 ECTS (ECTS).





Language of Instruction

The language of instruction of our department is Turkish. Optionally, foreign language preparatory class can be read.

 Full time





Admission and Registration Requirements

59 students are admitted to the Department of Cartoon and Animation with the Central Placement Exam held by OSYM. In Central Placement, candidates are placed in the Department of Cartoon and Animation by ÖSYM by taking YKS-AYT scores, preferences related to higher education programs and the quota and conditions of these programs into consideration.

Registrations of students placed in the Department of Cartoon and Animation are made by the Registrar's Office within the calendar determined by ÖSYM.

Double Major–Minor Programs

 

Major Application

 

Successful students pursuing their undergraduate studies in the Animation and Animation Department can take second undergraduate training simultaneously in other sections of our university where our department is in agreement. Students who have successfully completed the Double Major Program and have earned two bachelor's degrees are granted two separate undergraduate diplomas.

Minor Application

 

For 2018 and before: In the second major program which accepts students with the talent exam, students are required to be successful in the talent exam.

During the course of our students, within the framework of a specific program for the undergraduate education of another department which is close to the main departments in terms of subject, total Minor Degree Graduation ECTS Credit: 40 credits.Students who successfully complete the minor program together with the major program are awarded with a bachelor's degree diploma and a minor license certificate.

 





Internship

 Students are required to complete an internship for 40 working days outside the institution.

Occupational Profiles Of Graduates

Graduates of the Department of Cartoon and Animation, you can work as an Illustrator, Graphic Designer, Animation Artist, Storyboard Artist,Concept artist,  Academician, Video/Editing Operator, Producer, Special Effects Operator, 2D and 3D Modeling Expert, Game Designer, Animation Film Critic, Educator and Character Designer in advertising agencies, multimedia companies, television channels and post-production companies/studios.





Access to Further Studies

 Students who successfully graduate from the Department of Cartoon and Animation of Istanbul Kültür University have the right to graduate and doctorate in any institution related to their field.





Departmental Facilities

IIn our department, our students will receive a general education about the department with a theoretically supported curriculum with a large percentage of application courses. "In the Cartoon and Animation Undergraduate Program, it will be ensured that students get to know their fields of study with academic staff, and in this context, academic studies will be supported by academic staff from the sector. In the Cartoon and Animation sector, there is a need for young and dynamic staff who are national or international experts, competent, effective/knowledgeable. 
The need of institutions and organizations in the field of Cartoon and Animation continues to increase day by day. The students who are equipped with scientific and applied knowledge, who are versatile, trained technologists, creative / productive, and equipped with scientific and applied knowledge will be trained through the "Cartoon and Animation Undergraduate Program". The students of the program will be equipped with communication, art, design culture, technology and digital media formations to fill the gap in this field; thus, graduates will be able to find job opportunities in the field of Cartoon and Animation.





Program Activities

During the year, various activities such as technical trips, exhibitions, conferences, talks, workshops, IKU Game Design and Development Club (ikuotg), IKU Cartoon and Animation Club (ikucfa) activities, participation in film festivals in the national or international animation category.
