Program Objectives

Department of Communication Arts (Advertising and Public Relations); It offers an integrated training program with a modular system in the fields of Advertising and Public Relations. The department aims to raise its students as individuals who have basic knowledge on subjects such as communication, media, culture, art and politics, who make connections between different fields with public relations and advertising, and who can produce new and original thoughts.

Graduates of the Department of Communication Arts, careers in the field of Media, Advertising, Public Relations, Brand Management and Marketing Communications.





Establishment

 

Istanbul Kültür University, Faculty of Arts and Design, Department of Communication Arts was established in July 1997, with the contributions of Prof. Dr. Nükhet Güz. The department accepted its first students in the 2002-2003 academic year. Prof. Dr. Nükhet Güz, followed by Prof. Dr. Rengin Küçükerdoğan and Prof. Dr. Işıl Zeybek acted as department head, while Assoc. Prof. Dr. Öykü Ezgi YILDIZ acted as assistant department head. From the 2009-2010 academic year onwards, the Department of Communication Arts began accepting students with their TS-1 points. The department first opened in 2001 at the main building at the Şirinevler Campus. Due to the increasing number of students applying to the department every year, the department moved to the Ataköy Campus in 2004. In 2003, the department began its masters program.





Qualification Awarded

 

Students who fulfill the requirements of the four year undergraduate program (240 AKTS) get the degree of “Communications Arts (Advertising – Public Relations)". And they are going to be qualified to be employed in a large range of professions: public relations strategist, specialist of advertising, communication consultancy etc.





Language of Instruction

 

The language of education is Turkish.





Mode of Education

It is compulsory to complete the 4 year undergraduate curriculum and 40 days summer training.








Admission and Registration Requirements

 

Communication Arts Departments accept students with required grades on OSS verbal tests 1 of the University Entrance Examination and serve their students with their faculty members and leading experts of the market, not only during the academic year but also afterwards.

Registration process is completed by the Registrar's office.

Double Major–Minor Programs

 
Double Major   The students who successfully accomplish their major program will be able to attend courses for Double-Major in other relevant departments. Students, who succesfully complete the Double Major program and receive the right to the undergraduate degree of both departments, are given two separate Undergraduate diplomas.   Minor Programs   The students has the opportunity to attend minor programs in related department by attending at least 30 ECTS courses. The students who complete the minor program successfully will be awarded with a certificate for this minor program along with a Communication Arts’ undergraduate diploma.





Internship

 
The students are required to complete internship in the institution and complete 40 days internship out of the institution.







Graduation Requirements

Students are required to fulfill 240 ECTS credits (28% elective courses, 72% compulsory courses) and 40 days summer training. The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) shall be minimum 2.00 over 4.00 to be successful and to complete the Program.





International Cooperations

Communication Arts Department (Advertising – Public Relations) students can have opportunity to have education as an Erasmus student in the Universities that the department has bilateral agreements with.

Occupational Profiles Of Graduates

 
The students who graduates from Communication Arts Department (Advertising- Public Relations) will have titles such as ; Public relations specialist, Advertising designer/specialist, Advertising text writer, Communication strategist, Corporate communication coordinator, Communication consultant, Brand manager   The graduates will be able to make a career in consumer relations or human resource departmens and also they will be able to have a career about planning and organization in culture and art areas.   In addition to this the graduates will be able to prefer academic career by attending graduate and post graduate programs.





Access to Further Studies

 
The students who graduate from İstanbul Kültür Üniversity Communication Arts Department (Advertising- Public Relations) have the right to attend an undergraduate or post graduate program in any University that has programs related to their areas.   If the students who graduate from Communication Arts Department fulfill the requirements required for graduate program , they will be able to apply to İstanbul Kültür University Communication Arts Graduate Program (with thesis).





Departmental Facilities

Faculty of Arts and Design is located at an area of 3000m2 . Communication Department benefits from this area and the joint use lecture rooms are open to the departmental use. There are 24 classrooms within the faculty and 13 of them are 30m2, 10 of them are 45 m2 and one of them is 80m2. These classrooms have projection machines and internet connection. The Faculty can host 650 students.
Communication Arts Department also has advertising and public relations workshops in order to provide students make practice. Faculty’s Mac and PC laboratories can be also used by the students. Students can also benefit from the library at Ataköy Campus. The library  is located at an area of 560m2 and it can serve 170 students at the same time with a capacity of 25.000 books in total at two storeys. The interdisciplinary structure of the department is supported by lecturers  and teaching fellows specialised in different areas such as art, art history, administration and public relations. The students can benefit from the Akıngüç Auditorium, Önder Öztunalı Conferance Hall, the art galleries and studios  of the university. In addition to this Students can also benefit from the library at Ataköy Campus. The library  is located at an area of 560m2 and it can serve 170 students at the same time with a capacity of 25.000 books in total at two storeys. Communication Arts Department’s students have the opportunity to have education abroad in one of the partner universities as an Erasmus student. Our students have the opportunity to follow research programs related to their interests in “İKU Academic Center Units”. The students can also participate to the events by taking responsibility in IKU Interactive Communication Club, Marketing Communication Club, Communication Arts Club (CAC).   In Communication Arts Department, young communication students trying to specialize in Advertising and Public Relations areas are directed by academic staff who are competent,experienced and who have performed successful works in national and international platform.   Communication Arts Department Academic Staff is composed of the people who are competent in their area of specialization.

  Since the establisment of Communication Arts Department (Advertising- Public Relations) the students have been provided information through seminars that  help them in planning their future career. In these events the students meet professionals of the sector. These are;   Under the coordination of Prof.Dr. Işıl Zeybek; in order to help university students having economic difficulties, a series of seminars entitled “Youth Improvement Center Seminars” were  given in collaboration with “Bakırköy City Council Women Assembly” . The seminar lecturers were; Lecturer Oktay Verel, Lecturer Serfiraz Ergun, Assist.Prof.Volkan Ekin, Lecturer Nur Erdem Özeren, Lecturer Zafer Erkoç.   Under the coordination of Prof.Dr. Işıl Zeybek; the students developed communication strategies for “Penti” . Five different gorup of students worked for three months for the project and at the end three months students obtained a certificate.   Under the coordination of Associate Prof Dr.Volkan Ekin ,  Public Relations students sold home made marmalade on 11-12 May 2011 in order to help KAÇUV foundation. At the end of two days the students provided financial support to KAÇUV.   Under the coordination of Prof.Dr.Rengin Küçükerdoğan and Res.Assist. Gizem Şimşek, workshops were prepared for Kültür College Kindergarten students ( for Alkent, Bahçeşehir, Florya campuses) in collaboration with Kültür Kindergartens at Art and Design Faculty. The workshops consisted of; photography, painting, graphics, theatre, singing and animation. The students had the opportunity to make and present creative works throughout these workshops.    -In Communication Arts Department aside from department events, the students are provided opportunity and necessary environment to create their own projects In this context “Brand Hour” event can be given as an example of these projects . Our students has carried the following projects;   In  “Brand Hour I” event Corporate Communication Director of Tekin Acar Cosmetic Company, Hande Güngör,   In “Brand Hour II” event Marketing Coordinator of Ayaydın&Miroglio Group which is one of the reputable companies in Turkey’s textile sector, Pınar Uçkan,   In “Brand Hour III” event from Asemble Education and Consultancy , Sinan Ergin were invited.   - The students also have the opportunity to watch and enjoy their time by the presentations of “Kampüste Mola” ve “Reklam Oburları” .   -Above all the students have the opportunity to present their personal works in “Communication Arts Workshop” exhibitons that are prepared at the end of the year.   -Communication Arts Department Academic Staff prepare congress and symposiums in coordination with ‘Art and Design Faculty Academic Staff by considering the similar congress and symposiums performed abroad. Some of the most important ones are as follows;   SEMIO, VIII. International Visual Semiotics Congress which was held in our University in 2007 with the presentations made in four different languages and with the participation of 167 foreign and local scientists and the most famous people in semiotics.   Visualist 2012 (International Congress on Visual Culture: New Approaches in Communication, Arts and Design: Digitalization) wich was  held  from March 7th to March 9th 2012. The Congress brought together academics and professionals coming from different fields to discuss their differing point of views on these questions related to “Visual Culture” while referring to “digitalization”. (The subjects of the congress are; “New Media”, “Digital Arts”, “Digital Society”, “Communication Arts”, “Performing Arts”, “Visiual Culture”, “Visual Arts”, “Visual Semiotics and Practices” etc.)
