Program Objectives

The vision of the department is to adopt both a national and an international  approach to the studies of management and administraton of  Phonetic and Plastic Arts and to maintain its continuous progress. This area of study has flourished recently due an increasing social demand and the need to meet this demand professionally through activities, organisations and institutions. An Art Manager is a someone  working  in a sector whose product is a form of art and therefore he is a professional that evaluates this product and turns it into a cultural and economic value. The aim of the department is to lead such  professionals and to contribute to arts sector.  





Establishment

Based on the act of 4281, the department recruited its first students in 2002-2003 academic year after the opening of Art and Design Faculty under the conduct of Dr. Nüket Güz (Dean) at the main building of Şirinevler Campus. In 2004, the faculty moved to Ataköy Campus and the department has been functioning since then with a rising number of students.  The department awarded students for the first time in 2005-06 academic year. Professor Raik ALNIAÇIK, Professor Nükhet Güz, Professor Özer Sezgin and Professor İsmet Vildan ALPTEKİN are the heads of the department so far and the department  is still maintaing an up-to- date and modern education system directed by Prof.Dr. Mehmet USTUNIPEK.

Previously the department recruited students through auditions but since 2009-2010 academic year, the access depends on the results of SOZEL (a type of Turkish university entry exam grading). Art Management Postgraduate Programme has also been functioning under the direction of Institute of Social Sciences  since 2002-03.





Qualification Awarded

 Students who complete minumum 240 ECTS studying courses listed in 2018-19  (over 4 years)  annual lesson plan are awarded with a Bachelor’s Degree and they are given a title as Arts Manager and Administrator.





Language of Instruction

The language of instruction in the depatment is Turkish and a year of preparatory class is an option for  students who would like to study English for a year.

Admission and Registration Requirements

 Art Management recruits 40 students every year  through a central placement test called ÖSYM (Student Selection and Placement Centre) . Candidates are placed by ÖSYM according to their SOZEL (High School Sufficiency Exam), their choices of  Higher Education programmes  and quota of these programmes. Students register with the department at Öğrenci İşleri Daire Başkanlığı (Student Affairs) on  dates specified by ÖSYM.

Internship

Students are supposed to do an internship for 40 work days before the end of their studies. Through this practical experience at culture and art institutions, students have the chance to enrich the professional knowledge they have built up throughout their education.







Graduation Requirements

 

Students have to  complete the courses of the programme (240 ECTS) with 2.0 CGPA out of 4.00.





International Cooperations

 

The department has mutual Erasmus agreements with; Fachhohochschule Vorarlberg (Austria), Zeppelin University(Germany), National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts(Bulgaria), Polytechnical University of Valencia(Spain), Malmö University(Sweden), Karlschochschule International University (Germany), Academia di Belle Arti di Frosinone(Italy), International Bussiness School Budapest (Hungary). What is more, art management studies are open to international practice opportunities.

Access to Further Studies

Students who successfully complete their undergraduate studies can do a Masters degree in Art Management provided that they meet the requirements of the department.





Departmental Facilities

Faculty of Arts and Design is located at an area of 3000m2 the joint use amphitheathers are open to the departmental use. There are 24 classrooms within the faculty and 13 of them are 30m2, 10 of them are 45 m2 and one of them is 80m2. These classrooms have projections and internet connection. The Faculty can host 650 students. Arts Management activities also take place at Akıngüç Auditorium, Önder Öztunalı Conferance Hall, the art galleries and studios  of the university.

Students can also benefit from the library at Ataköy Campus. The library  is located at an area of 560m2 and it can serve 170 students at the same time with a capacity of 25.000 books in total at two storeys.

The interdisciplinary structure of the department is supported by lecturers  and teaching fellows specialised in different areas such as art, art history, administration and public relations.

Program Activities

 In a metropolitian city like İstanbul, students  are able to be in connection with art charities and societies, theatres, galleries, museums... etc, so they have the chance to follow contemporary art activities. What is more, they can join the activities of student clubs , galleries, conferences and  exhibitions at Akıngüç Auditorium, Önder Öztunalı Conferance Hall and art galleries at the university.

 Students get ready for their professional lives through mandatory and selective courses, interm and final projects as well as internships. Exhibitions that were organised in collaboration with Marmara University and Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts, Keşanlı Ali Destanı as a final project of art management at International Cüneyt Gökçer Theatre Festival are just  a few examples. Students graduate with an awareness of themselves as art managers.
