Program Objectives

 
The doctorate program of the Department of Turkish Language and Literature in Istanbul Kultur University has an interdisciplinary perspective, and with the experts who have deep knowledge in their fields aims to educate scholars who will train and research in academic institutions. The candidates who complete this program will have a theoretical base in the field of Turkish Language and Literature. Therefore, the candidates will contribute the selected filed by synthesizing this base with the developments, changes, and innovations in the field.





Establishment

 
In 2002-2003 academic years, the department started to give education in main building at Şirinevler Campus, which commenced service by the senatus consultum dated 20 April 2000 under the presidency of Prof. Dr. İskender Pala. With the increasing number of students, in 2005, it continues to give its education at Ataköy campus. The Department of Turkish Language and Literature, which began its education with one student, and today, have 30 students, keeps on developing and growing up in respect to both the academic staff and the number of student. In our department from the establishment, respectively, Prof. Dr. İskender PALA, Prof. Dr. Durali YILMAZ, Prof. Dr. Hayati DEVELİ, Prof. Dr. Ömür CEYLAN carried on the task of the Head of the Department. As from 2013, Prof. Vahit TÜRK carries on this task.





Qualification Awarded

 
The students who successfully complete all the courses in the graduate curriculum, which lasts for 4 years, and get at least 240 ECTS (The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) are awarded with the Doctoral Degree in Turkish Language and Literature.

The language of instruction is Turkish.

Admission and Registration Requirements

 
-          To have a Master's Degree (In case of getting a master’s degree abroad, this degree should be recognized by the council of higher education (YÖK)). -          To have the Exam Result of ALES: in the Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance exam (ALES), to have at least a score of 55 in verbal score or at least a score of 450 in GMAT(Graduate Management Admission Test), GRE score of at least 610(Graduate Record Examination) in the Quantitative field, and in the application the exam result should be submitted. The Exam Result of Foreign Language: To have at least a score of 55 from the Foreign Language Exam (YDS) carried out by ÖSYM or to have an equivalent score from the tests accepted by the inter-university board. The validity period of the exam results of Foreign Language is 3 (three) years as from exam dates. For non-Turkish candidates, the following documents are required for application apart from their native language; according to Istanbul Kultur University (IKU) Regulation of Graduate Education and Examinations 9/4 Article, the candidates should have a competence certificate in Turkish or in one of the language accepted as a language of the associate professorship by ÜAK (Interuniversity Council). For non-Turkish candidates who do not have a competence certificate, the jury constituted by the relevant institute holds an examination and the candidates must successfully complete this exam.

In the Department of Turkish Language and Literature, the internship is not essential.







Graduation Requirements

 
To get 3:00 grade point average for doctoral program by bringing all the courses equivalent to 240 credit to a successful conclusion.





International Cooperations

 
Apart from Erasmus Exchange Program, we work in cooperation with the leading universities from the world of Turkology. We have agreements with the Sorbonne University, the University of Manchester, and Tallinn University within the frame of Erasmus program. We are maintaining a short-length film projects in collaboration with Baku Slavic University, Azerbaijan, and the signed student-lecturer exchange program with the same university is on the agenda as well. According to the agreement between our university and Astrakhan State University of Russia, a delegation consisting of some students and academics from our university have been in the aforementioned university for Russian language course. We are also on the final stage of preparation for The International Linguistics and Comparative Literature Symposium organized in cooperation with the same university. We gave a visit with the broad participation to Turkish Language Center at The University of Aleppo (Syria) and have agreed in principle for academic cooperation. In the near future, a protocol proposing cooperation is to be signed with Kazan Federal University.





Occupational Profiles Of Graduates

 
Graduates of the Department of Turkish Language and Literature will have opportunity to work as a lecturer in the university or in the higher education institutions.

Departmental Facilities

 
In our department, there are 8 full-time, 1 part time faculty, and 3 hourly paid lecturers (DSÜ). Also there are 5 full-time research assistants. The Departments of Old Turkish Literature, Modern Turkish Literature, Folk Literature, and Turkish Language are responsible for the execution of the curriculum. There are 2 instructors in the Department of Old Turkish Literature, 4 instructors in Modern Turkish Literature, 4 instructors in the Department of Turkish Language, and 1 instructor in the Department of Folk Literature. There are 2 research assistants in the Department of Modern Turkish Literature, 2 in the Department of Old Turkish Literature, and 1 in the Department of Turkish Language. Currently, there are 30 students enrolled in the graduate program. Besides, with the qualified work environment and its rich collections, the university library provides the students for academic research. The library was founded in 1997-1998 for providing the information and documents needs and supporting the university’s research activities and its education. The library of Istanbul Kultur University gives service in two different branches as the library of Ataköy Campus and the library ofŞirinevler Campus. Istanbul University Ataköy Campus is sufficiently big to provide services to 250 students. It was established on 560m² and it is two-storied. Library takes 35.000 books. Şirinevler Campus is for 100 persons and takes 15.000 books; it is established on 300m² closed area. The library in Ataköy Campus contains the reference books, the publications on economics and administrative sciences, natural sciences, engineering, architecture, social and general subject. The library of Şirinevler Campus consists of the reference books, the publication on law and general subject. The library collections are developed through purchase and donations. The books and journals, which will be purchased, are determined by the requests of our students, faculty, and staffs. The sources in our library are put into place according to tenfold Dewey classification and it works with open shelf system. The materials in the library are transferred into electronic media by using YORDAM 2001 library automation program and through internet; the university put them into service for the readers. The users can make online catalogue research on the computers in the library. In addition, users by their laptop can access internet by using Wireless. Istanbul Kultur University is member of the following databases: ACM Digital, Beckonline, EBRARY (Electronic Book),Hein Online, IEEL: IEEE/IEE (Electronic Library), JSTOR, Kazancı Legislation-Precedent Search Engine, Kazancı Bank of Law Works, Material ConneXion Materials, MathSciNet, Oxford English Dictionary, Project MUSE, Springer, Science Direct, Taylor&Francis, ULAKBİM National Database, Web of Science SCI, SSCI, AHC, WOS, WestLaw, Wiley Online Library. In addition to these, the Department library, open to the department students, is notably rich for the fieldwork.
