Program Objectives

The vision of Istanbul Kültür University, “By adhering to the national, universal values ​​and rules of higher education, by integrating our horizontal and vertical environment and improving our relations on the basis of benefit, to provide reliable, effective and useful applications to our students, business life and the whole environment and, for this purpose, to produce the necessary information". Based on this principle, the mission of the Department of Special Education Teaching is to ensure that the students receive the highest level of education in line with the needs of the age; in addition to pedagogy courses and field-specific courses they receive from experienced faculty members of IKU Faculty of Education, it is also aimed to guide students in gaining experience by practicing in schools and achieving their teaching qualifications. 

The goal of the Special Education Program is to equip future special education teachers with theoretical and practical knowledge and skills that aim to ensure that individuals with special needs are active, productive, and independent. In addition, the program aims to conduct scientific research and do academic publications related to the education of individuals with special needs. In brief, the goal of the program is to educate future special education teachers so that they will be able to provide special education services to individuals with special needs both individually and in group as well as to take part in the planning, implementation, and monitoring of special education services.





Establishment

The department of Special Education was founded in 2019 and admitted students for the first time in the 2022-2023 academic year.

Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Special Education.

Admission and Registration Requirements

 Candidate students are required to take the Central Placement Exam administered by the Centre for Assessment, Selection, and Placement (ÖSYM) and meet placement criteria.

 

In the Central Placement System, candidates are placed by the ÖSYM according to their verbal domain scores and concerning their preferences as long as the program quotas and the provisions of the program allow. Students are enrolled by the Department of Student Affairs within the timetable provided by the ÖSYM.

Double Major–Minor Programs

According to the University’s Bachelor’s Degree Education and Exams Regulations, students who have successful academic record at the department of Special Education have right to apply a double major at their preference beginning from 2023 Fall. Click on it to check the recent instructions and regulations. 

The students enrolled in the Special Education Program and are successful in a minor program are granted the diploma of Special Education and a Minor Program Certificate.





Internship

The students who attend to Special Education Program can gain practical experience in education intuitions affiliated with the Ministry of Education within the scope of the Teacher Training Practicum course in the undergraduate curriculum.







Graduation Requirements

 To obtain a BA degree in Special Education, students must complete the required credits (240 ECTS) with a minimum of 2.0 GPA on 4.0 scale.





International Cooperations

ERASMUS exchange program is a service that facilitates collaboration within the Higher Education Institutions of Europe. It funds projects jointly run by Higher Education Institutions and supports short-term student and staff exchange. Students in the Special Education program can benefit from the funds to become exchange students in a European Higher Education Institution.





Occupational Profiles Of Graduates

Graduates of Special Education programs can get hired by private schools and public schools associated with the Ministry of Education, Guidance and Research Centers, Special Education Schools, Rehabilitation Centers, or at nursery schools and orphanages associated with the Ministry of Family and Social Policy.





Access to Further Studies

Master’s and Ph.D. degrees are not offered currently in the Special Education program. 

After the first graduates of the program, it is planned to open Master's Programs with thesis within the scope of the Department of Special Education at the Institute of Graduate Studies of Istanbul Kültür University.





Departmental Facilities

Department of Special Education has agreements with the following universities within the scope of the ERASMUS exchange program: University of Hradec Králové (Czech Republic),  Palacký University Olomouc (Czech Republic), Queen Maud University College (Norway).. In addition, students of the Faculty of Education can enroll to the Double Major programs offered by other departments within the university.





Program Activities

Undergraduates of the Department of Special Education have opportunity to share the products and materials that they have prepared in the courses through exhibitions, meetings, and conferences. Our students can take part in the conferences and seminars hosting academics and professionals in the field under the leadership of our department.
