The aim of the theory of conservation course is to discuss historical development of the idea of conservation; conservation approaches of the monuments in Antiquity and the Middle Ages; conservation approaches developed after the French Revolution; new trends developed in the 19th century in the area of building conservation: precursors of Viollet-le-Duc in France, publications of Viollet-le-Duc, debate on his ideas and examples of his practice, pioneer architects in the area of building conservation in UK, philosophers and organizations approaches to the building conservation in UK, and comparisons with the situation in France; the first archaeological restoration works in Italy (excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum); historical restoration works in Italy and related to it; industrialization and conservation, meetings and their results which are caused new opinions in the theory of conservation; Boito, Annoni, Giovannoni and new ideas; Carta Del Restauro, Athens Charter; Venice Charter and the main innovations in the theory of conservation; the World Wars and the development from the building conservation towards environmental and urban conservation; establishment and missions of ICOMOS; the concept of authenticity in the area of conservation (Nara Conference); new concepts in conservation like intangible heritage, historic urban landscape, etc. and current approaches to conservation works in Turkey.

To have advenced level knowledge and realization about basic issues of conservation which are restoration theories, international modern conservation principles, national and international legal and organizational regulations and recording cultural heritage.

To have advenced level of knowledge and realization about design principles of new addition to the historic building and infill building in historic settlement, measured drawing, restitution and restoration projects of historic building.
