Program Objectives

 
In our country with the rich history that has a special importance among all the others, protection of the education is undisputed. Wrong decisions and applications done without any quality in this concept are causing irreversible damages to culture items and the environment. Our program’s purpose is to resolve this deficiency and to give architects expert education about historical environment protection and structure. In the program, students are given information about; restoration concepts; modern protection principles; documentation of culture items; analysis and protection methods of traditional materials; traditional texturing systems and problems; national and international legal and organizational arrangements about protection subject; preparation of reuse, restoration, restitution, survey projects of historical structures; evaluation of historical environments; morphology and typology studies; site protection examples from Turkey and from the world; new structure approaches in the historical environment; improvement of protection and rehabilitation projects in the concept of these two different measurements of protection and at least two semester projects will be done by students. Project subjects should be chosen from Anatolia’s historical buildings and environments as possible, students meeting and working on different area properties outside of Istanbul is being aimed at. The program is also being enriched with common projects and workshops conducted at some universities in Europe, Istanbul and foreign countries and with conferences of local and international experts related to the subject. Students that complete their two semester courses can start their thesis study on their decided subjects with their teaching assistants.





Establishment

IKU Architecture Major Architecture graduate program started accepting students in 2001 – 2001 education year, fall semester.

 Architecture Major Branch was separated into various programs in 2004 – 2005 academic year, Architectural History and Restoration graduate program was established in this concept and it started accepting students in 2011 – 2012 education year fall semester.
Program renovation studies done in 2010 – 2011 semesters  resulted in and the new program will be started to apply from 2011 – 2012 education year fall semester.





Qualification Awarded

A diploma stating that the student has graduated from the Architectural History and Restoration Masters program is given to students who succeed in all lectures that take part in the education plan and have at least 120 ECTS credits.

Admission and Registration Requirements

It is required to have a Bachelor degree and score higher than 55 quantitative points from Selection Examination for Academic Personnel and Graduate Studies (ALES) for application to Architectural MArch Programme. Science Exam, English Proficiency Test and Oral Interview are done before the admission to the programme. They are evaluated as ALES 50%, English Proficiency Test 10%, Undergraduate Points Average 20% and Oral Interview+Science Exam 20%. During the application, ALES document which is taken in the last 5 years, diploma, transcript, military situation document (for males), a copy of identity card, 2 photographs and registration fee receipt are taken. During the precise administration not the copy but the originals of these documents and the student contribution margin receipt are wanted. Programme application date is declared by the university.

Graduation Requirements

 Students are required to fulfill 120 ECTS credits. The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is shall be minimum 2.7 over 4.00 to be successful and to complete the Program.





International Cooperations

Erasmus is an education and training program, aiming a common modernization and coherence of graduate education in EU countries and in countries which are in EU membership process, enabling    students to study and work abroad, as well as supporting cooperation among graduate education institutions across Europe. As in other EU countries, graduate students in Turkey have the right to use student mobility or work placement opportunities once, if they have an   Erasmus grant; and more than once if they do not have  Erasmus grants. Graduate level, in particular, is a preferred stage for  exchange, with its flexible and individualistic character for all countries.

Graduate students, who are interested in Erasmus Student Mobility, are     selected according to both their Erasmus Grades (which is determined according to their cumulative GPA’s and and the results of  their foreign language examination, organized by our University), and their order of preference of the partner universities. After this selection phase, the candidate students have the privilege to select one of our Erasmus Partner European Universities,    according to their fields of interest and continue to develop their theses with a supervisor from the hosting university for one or two semesters, as a part of their graduate education at IKU.

In addition, within the framework of Erasmus Staff Exchange Program, many international scholars visit our Master of Architecture Program to give       lectures on their specialization areas. 

Through Common Educational Studies within Erasmus Program, higher number of students have the chance to get involved within common courses, laboratory and workshop studies held mutually and coordinated in parallel with our Erasmus Partner Universities. Within this context, our Master of    Architecture Program has realized many studies successfully in Turkey and abroad.

As a result, Erasmus and Other International Common Studies are accepted as an integral part of  our Master of Architecture Program, raising it to an   international level, together with our students and our educational staff, aiming to become beneficial for all of our graduate students.

Access to Further Studies

 Any student who completes MArch Programme with success can apply to PhD Programmes of the Department of Architecture or lots of other departments. Students successful in ALES, YDS or an equivalent exam, science exam and oral interview, have a chance to be accepted to PhD education. 

 





Departmental Facilities

Department of Architecture has a material studio, computer studio and material-concrete studio. 4 professors, 6 associate professor, 11 assistant professors are assigned in the Department of Architecture in 2017/2018 academic year.
